South Kitsap Babe Ruth 13s bound for state tourney

"The South Kitsap Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball team climbed through the loser-out bracket of the District 8 tournament to capture the district championship July 13-15 in Silverdale and earn a state berth in Wenatchee.SK opened up the state tournament with a game against Wenatchee Thursday.SK opened the district tournament with a 4-2 loss to Bainbridge Island. SK manager David Smothers said his squad had cold bats and played tight on defense despite strong pitching from Tristen Iskra, Brent Pishue, and Daniel Dillard.The bats heated up in a rematch against Bainbridge Island as SK earned a 9-7 victory.Dillard and Iskra each had two hits. Garrett Mueller went four strong innings before three relievers finished the game off.The win propelled the team into two must-win games.Central Kitsap went through the tournament unscathed and needed just one win to earn the district title.SK pushed CK to a winner-take-all game after defeating CK 7-3 behind the complete game pitching performance from Dillard. In the championship game SK busted out of the gates with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.CK bounced back with three runs of its own in the third inning, but SK stole one back in the bottom of the inning and another in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead.CK added one in the top of the seventh but that was all it managed.SK played errorless defense and rode on the pitching of Iskra, Mueller, and Brent Pishue.Other members on the team include: Brett Bielec, Ryan Cosgrove, David Hammrich, Jr., Zach Jacob, Nate Jones, Kenny Ladenburg, Doug McCarthy, Kyle Pease, Aaron Smothers, and Andrew Thatcher. Ron Pease and George Ladenburg are the other coaches. "
