Sounders plan exhibition in Bremerton

The Bremerton Soccer Club is bringing the Seattle Sounders professional soccer team to Memorial Stadium Friday, April 25, for a 7 p.m. exhibition game against the Oregon State University mens team.

All tickets are $5 with kids age 5 and under getting in free. Tickets are available at the gate or can be purchased in advance in Bremerton at the Olympic College Bookstore, West Side Burrito Connection and One World Bagel; in Manette at Pete’s Jersey Subs and in Silverdale at the Soccer Pitch.

“This is a neat opportunity to watch high-quality soccer right here in Bremerton,” said organizer Lance McCoy, who first contacted the Sounders over a year ago with the idea of coming to town.

The Sounders, who begin regular season play on May 1 against the Portland Timbers, have many new faces on the roster. Off-season acquisitions include former Sounder and Major League Soccer (MLS) player Sean Henderson, ex-MLS players Alex Bengard and Danny Jackson and Sean Michael Callahan.

Returning starters from the Sounders historical 2002 season (when they enjoyed the second-best record in league history at 23-4-1) include 2002 A-League MVP Leighton O’Brien, First Team All A-League member Andrew Gregor, Scott Jenkins, Viet Nguyen, Ryan Edwards, Jason Farrell, Darren Sawatzky, and 2nd Team All A-League goalkeeper Preston Burpo.

OSU, coached by 2002 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Dana Taylor finished atop several Pac-10 regular-season team and individual statistical categories, including shots, points, goals, assists, and their corresponding per-game averages. The Beavers won a school-record 13 games and qualified NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history.

The Beavers averages of 14.4 shots per game, 6.65 points and 2.35 goals led the conference, and 1.95 assists per game was the only major category in which Oregon State did not lead the conference, finishing .10 behind UCLA. OSU also led in saves per game with a 4.95 mark.

Prior to the start of the Sounders-Beavers game, the FC Kitsap Explosion and the Bremerton O’Niners (both select girls 13U teams) will play a game starting at 4:45 p.m.
