Believe the hype.

Just six days after stopping De La Salle's 151-game winning streak, the Bellevue Wolverines showed no ill after affect of that historic win, rolling over South Kitsap 64-20 Friday night at Wolverine Stadium.

"I can't account for it," South Kitsap coach D.J. Sigurdson said. "It looked like we were playing on our heels the whole time. That's how it felt - like we were trying to be in the right place and not playing very aggressive all night."

Bellevue, which is the three-time defending Class 3A state champs and the No. 10 ranked team in the nation according to USA Today, wasted little time in letting everyone know there would be no let down after last week's win at Qwest Field. Not even after preparing nine months to face the nation's top-rated team in De La Salle.

The Wolverines converted a South fumble on the game's second play into a 3-0 lead and that became 10-0 just two and half minutes later and grew to 23-0 at the end of the first quarter. Bellevue added three more scores in the second quarter and the rout was on.

"They're good," South lineman Kyle Saltsgaver said. "They're real good. But we didn't do what we were coached to do."

Running out of a Wing -T base that looks more like a spread option, Bellevue ran at will all night, rolling to 435 yards on 36 carries.

Thomas Zaffino led the Wolverines with 101 yards on just five tries and scored on runs of 37 and 43 yards. JR Hasty picked up 95 yards on 10 carries and scored three times while Steven Englund racked up 92 yards on two carries.

"They are as good as I thought they were," Sigurdson said.

And as good as their offense was, the Bellevue defense looked even better at times, limiting the Wolves to 183 yards of offense, 120 of that coming on the ground and all but 39 of it coming in the second half.

Senior tailback Anthony Galloway ended the night with 100 very tough yards on 20 carries while junior quarterbacks Kyle Pease and David Hammrich combined to go 8-18-0 for 63 yards.

The lone highlights for South came on Galloway's nifty 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Dylan Pierce's 90-yard kickoff return for a score.

"We knew what to expect," Pierce said. "They are a good team and all, but we just need to step it up. We had a chance if we would have just read our keys and played hard the whole game."

Orry Perez closed out the scoring for the Wolves with a 2-yard score with 13 seconds left in the game.

South Kitsap, now 0-2 on the year, has little time to regroup. The Wolves start Narrows League Bridge Division play Friday night by hosting Port Angeles. Bellevue, 2-0, has the week off.

"We'll be ready to go," Saltsgaver said of league play. "We'll be ready."
