South Kitsap's dual-match win streak reaches 121
June 12, 2008 · Updated 3:14 PM
After what transpired the previous Saturday at the Central Kitsap Invitational, Tuesday nights South Kitsap-Central Kitsap dual wrestling match figured to be a good one.
In the end, it wasnt even close.
Brandon Kelly returned from a mild concussion to get the Wolves off on the right foot, and they put to rest any thought of an upset by winning the first six matches on their way to a 50-15 win.
I thought it would be closer, Kelly said. They have some decent wrestlers they showed that on Saturday.
Central was coming off a third-place finish at their own tournament the weekend before as three wrestlers made the finals while South took fifth and had one lone wrestler in the finals. With all that, many on the mat Tuesday night thought the Wolves 118-consecutive dual match winning streak might be in danger.
But no.
We went downstairs and got them fired up, SK co-coach Dave Dyess said. It was Senior Night and there was some pride. We talked about how this was a night where there was some pride on the line and we didnt want to mess around.
Kelly, who sat out the CK Invite with his concussion, made quick work of Chris Smith, pinning him three minutes, 42 seconds into their 135-pound match to get the Wolves off and running.
I kind of like going first, Kelly said. Its good and bad, I think. When I go first, I usually lead us off good.
Chris Hogan followed with a strong effort against Kevin Manalo, winning an 8-6 decision. Brady Winslow, Steve Medina, Orry Perez and Brent Chriswell added to the point total as South jumped out to a 26-0 lead.
Chriswell, who lost for the first time this year last week, got back in form quickly, pinning Ben Hornsy just 1:28 into their 171-pound match.
It was good, it was important because you dont want to stay in a slump, Chriswell said. I just focus on the matches that are at hand and try to get the job done.
Central scored its first points as Daniel Mayfield held off Lenny Schwartz 7-6 in the 189-pound match. Schwartz, who has been wrestling well as of late, overcame a 5-0 third-period deficit to almost pull out the match.
That was a heck of a match, Dyess said. And he wrestled Mayfield real well last Saturday, too. If he works hard, he might be able to get that guy when it really counts.
South continued to work toward its own Invitational today with a double-dual meet with Bremerton and Gig Harbor Thursday night.
The Wolves beat Gig Harbor 56-12 and Bremerton 74-6 to move the streak to 121.
The South Kitsap Invitational will begin today at 10 a.m. as 11 teams, including North and Central Kitsap come to Port Orchard. Finals are slated to begin around 3 p.m.
