SK swimmers 7th at WCD, small group heads to state

The South Kitsap boys swim team scored 107 points to place seventh at the West Central District Swimming and Diving Championships last weekend at Foss High School.

The Wolves will take a small but talented group to The Class 4A state meet Feb. 18-19 in Federal Way, led by Greg Mercer, Corey Smith and Nick Dargel.

Mercer will swim in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and the 200 and 400 free relays.

Smith will go in the 100 free, 200 medley relay and the 200 and 400 free relays while Dargel qualified in the 100 free, 100 back and 200 and 400 free relays.

Kris Bonar, Justin Sharrett, Skylar Page, Bryant Bartlett, Zach Riddle and James Murtha round of the team as members of the relays or as alternates.

• Wolves’ stumble badly against NK: The South Kitsap girls basketball team took another step in the wrong direction Friday night, losing to North Kitsap 44-27, making the race for the fourth and final Narrows League Bridge Division playoff spot much tighter.

South is still hanging onto the last spot with a 6-6 league mark, but the Vikings now trail by just one game at 5-7.

The Wolves, 10-8 overall, face Olympic (1-17, 0-12) tonight and close out the regular season Friday against Central Kitsap 16-1, 12-0).

North plays the same two teams.

Jamie Boyer paced the Wolves with 12 points while Jenna Reed led all scorers with 18.

The South junior varsity beat North 57-43 behind 17 points and four steals from Michelle Webber while Valerie Robinson added 10 points.
