It’s been a hit-and-miss year so far for the South Kitsap track and field team. But things are changing, coach Ed Santos said. And he needs to look no farther than last week’s dual meet with Central Kitsap, Port Angeles and Bremerton.

“As of right now, we’re looking about where I thought we would be this time of year,” Santos said. “They are progressing quite nicely.”

The South girls team, on the strength of its distance runners, won the meet with 97 points while the boys team took second.

“Track is so driven by the weather,” Santos said. “We could use some very nice weather, with that we could get some very fast marks. I think we’re ready to do that.

“I was very pleased with both teams on Friday, with the way they competed in conditions that weren’t very good, again,” Santos said. “This seemed to be the one where they let it affect them the least. I was really pleased with that.”

On the girls’ side, senior Sam Godfrey led the way, winning both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Shyla Coleman took second in each of those events as weel.

The tandem of Ashley Russ, Katie McKarin, Kelli Dalrymple and Maria Spiker placed first in the 4-by-400 relay while Angela Pappuleas won the 100 hurdles and Jenn Villalva took top honors in the discus.

“We have some pretty young girls in terms of the sprint corps,” Santos said. “We still have some growing pains there in terms of the relay handoffs and some things like that. But we’re getting better, and that’s really encouraging.”

The boys team competed on the strength of its distance runners, as well, as Nate Jones and Justin Schenck finished 1-2 in the 800, while Sean Coleman won the 3,200.

The Wolves also got a first-place finish from Crandall Cardinal in the discus while Renard Williams took second in the shot put and qualified for league.

"The kids did a nice job but we have some work to do in terms of the relays,” Santos said. “I was real pleased with a lot of people.”

The Wolves travel to Port Angeles Thursday for a dual meet with the Roughriders and North Kitsap.

Next comes a dual meet with Gig Harbor and Olympic and the ever-growing South Kitsap Invitational.
