District meet looms for SK

As expected, the South Kitsap distance runners and throwers carried the load at Saturday’s Narrows League Track and & Meet at the Lincoln Bowl in Tacoma.

But as the meet ended, the Wolves had qualified for 19 spots in this week’s West-Central District meet.

“Those guys were pretty solid,” South coach Ed Santos said. “All in all, it was a pretty successful meet.”

Team-wise, South finished sixth on the boys side and 12th on the girls. All those who qualified will take part in the WCD meet Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

The top eight in each event move on the state meet June 3-4 in Pasco.

South got most of its qualifiers through its distance races as Justin Schenck and Joe Daniels-Hall qualified in the 800 meters by finishing one-three, respectively.

Sean Coleman made it in two events, the 1,600 and 3,200 runs while the boys 4-by-400 relay also qualified.

South also got three throwers through to districts, led by sophomore Renard Williams in the shot put and Bryan Bayly and Cardinal Crandal in the discus.

“Renard threw well,” Santos said. “He should be seeded sixth and has a chance of possibly going to the state meet.”

Williams finished sixth with a throw of 51-feet, 8.5 inches, which would have won both the Greater St. Helen’s and South Puget Sound league meets.

Other boys to move on include Dustin Kemp in the 300 hurdles, Adam Wright in the 110 hurdles, Jose Gidican in the high jump and Ryan Otto in the long jump.

On the girls side, Sam Godfrey returns to the WCD meet in the 3,200 while Angela Pappuleaus qualified in two events, the 100 and 300 hurdles.

“She ran great,” Santos said. “She just keeps getting better and better. I think she has an outside shot at qualifying in (both events).”

The Wolves also qualified all three relays, the 400, 800 and 1,600, but Santos said it would be a reach to get them through to state.

“All three of those relays, we have to run really fast and get a little lucky,” Santos said. “We’re kind of on the back edge in our league. They’ve come a long way and ran well to qualify.”

Jennifer Villalva qualified in the discus for South.
