Wolves abound on All-Bridge football team

With a 6-4 record and a return to the top of the Narrows League Bridge Division standings, the South Kitsap football team received its fair share of post-season awards as 11 Wolves were named to the Narrows League Bride Division All-League team released last week.

The all-star team was chosen by the eight coaches in the Bridge Division schools.

South Kitsap, which finished tied atop the league standings with Gig Harbor at 6-1, dominated the offensive side of the team, led by quarterback Kyle Pease being named co-offensive player of the year along with Gig Harbor running back Gary Cole.

Pease, a senior, threw for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns over the course of the season, completing 90 of 148 attempts for a stellar 60.8 percentage rate. Pease also rushed 26 times for 92 and a score.

Joining Pease on the first team offense was junior running back Chad Fowler and senior receiver Monte Enyeart. Fowler led South in rushing, gaining 1,141 yards on 168 carries and scored 11 times while Enyeart was the team’s top receiver, hauling in 30 balls for 550 yards and five scores.

Up front, South saw seniors Kyle Saltsgaver and Mike Cook named as linemen. The pair led the team in hashmarks for the season, both going over 20.

Defensively, Saltsgaver was named co-player of the year along with Gig Harbor’s Jake Merrill. Saltsgaver anchored the Wolves defensive line while Merrill was the league’s best defensive back.

Saltsgaver, who had 48 tackles, 29 solos, on the year, was joined on the first team by fellow lineman Andrew Thatcher, who recorded 31 stops. Junior Cory Dame, with 59 tackles and 2 interceptions, was named to the second team as a defensive back.

South also has three players named to the special team, led by kicker Quincy Lyman. Lyman converted 37 of 45 extra points and was good on three of his five field goal attempts for 46 points.

Sophomore Mike Wittig was named first team long snapper while senior David Hammrich was deemed second team punter.
