After a stunning overtime loss Wednesday night at the hands of Gig Harbor, the South Kitsap boys basketball team wasted little time in letting the Narrows League Bridge Division they were still alive and kicking.
In fact, they scored before one second even ticked off the clock Friday night at Central Kitsap, never lost that lead and rode a pressure defensive and a big game from post Josh Monagle to a very convincing 82-47 win.
South improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play while the Cougars dropped to 5-3 and 3-1.
South, which entered the week ranked second in the state in Class 4A, blew a 13-point third-quarter lead Wednesday night to Gig Harbor and eventually lost the game on a buzzer-beating three-point goal in overtime.
SK coach John Callaghan said Thursday's practice centered on discipline and decision making and the Wolves showed they not only heard the message but fully understood it.
Monagle started strong and finished even stronger, netting 21 points while pulling down 12 rebounds in just three quarters of play. LP Neloms added 13 for South while Joe Pisa came of the bench to score 10. Ryan Sweet and Tysaiah Curry scored eight and nine points respectively.
South jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game even started when Tippy Burk drained a pair of free throws after Central was called for a technical foul right before the game's tip. South never lost that lead, first building it to 24-15 at the end of the first eight minutes.
The lead entered double-digits early in the second quarter and continued to grow throughout the rest of the game.
JR Gordon led Central with 17 points but most of those came in the fourth period when the game was way out of reach.
South is now in a second-place tie in the league with Central and Port Angeles. The Wolves play host to North Kitsap Wednesday.
