Wolves turn up the pressure, walk all over Tides

Tippy Burk and Ryan Sweet combined to score 46 points Friday night as the South Kitsap boy's basketball team rolled over the Gig Harbor Tides 82-51 in Narrows League Bridge Division action.

The win puts South, 15-1 overall and 9-1 in league play, in first place in division play and in firm control of its own destiny with just four division games remaining. The Tides, 13-3 and 8-2, are now tied with Central Kitsap for second place.

Gig Harbor, which entered the game ranked eighth in the state in Class 4A, had beaten the ninth-ranked Wolves 54-53 in overtime back on Jan. 4.

But this game would never be that close as South took a seven-point halftime lead and then put the game totally out of reach by outscoring the Tides 50-26 in the second half.

Burk, the Wolves junior point guard, broke out of his scoring slump with a game-high 24 points while Sweet, who sat out most of the first half with three fouls, scored 20 second-half points and ended the night with 22. Evan Atwater hit four three-point field goals to net 12 points for South.

Ryan Christensen, who hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to beat the Wolves on Jan. 4, had 14 to lead the Tides. Mathias Ward netted 13 while Clarence Trent added 12.

Gig Harbor was slapped with four technical fouls throughout the game, including one that got T.J. Nettles tossed from the game after pushing down South's L.P. Neloms during a break in the action.

South is at home Wednesday against Central Kitsap and travels to Poulsbo Friday to face North Kitsap.
