Duren, Williams falter during first day of state weekend

Friday was not a good day for two of South Kitsap's state partisipants.

Junior Renard Williams failed to place in the discus at the Class 4A state track & field meet in Pasco while senior Charlotte Duren lost both of her matches at the state tennis tournament.

Williams, who qualified for Star Track in two events, recorded a throw of just 132-07 in the discus and failed to place in the top eight, finishing 13th overall.

But he goes in his best event, the shot put, at noon today. Junior javelin thrower Nick Taylor will also compete today for South.

Duren's first trip to the Class 4A state tennis tournament was a short one.

The South Kitsap senior lost both her matches during Friday's opening day the Vancouver Tennis Center and was bounced from the double-elimination tournament.

Duren fell to Marie Demerath of Inglemoor 6-2, 6-0 in her opening match and then dropped a 6-4, 6-2 contest to Stanwood's Angie Schonberg to end her tourney.
