Former SK standout signs with Dodgers
Travis Vetters was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday as a non-drafted free agent and will spend this summer playing in Class-A Vero Beach Florida.
Vetters, who starred at South Kitsap in both baseball and football, recently graduated from the University of Portland, where he was a two-time All-West Coast Conference second team selection and hit .307 in four seasons (2003-06).
Vetters, who plays the outfield, also hit 13 home runs, knocked in 101 runs and tallied eight triples, tied for fourth most on Portlands career chart.
Vetters is UPs all-time leader in career at-bats (745) and ranks fifth in games started (184), seventh in games played (191) and total bases (319) and ranks eighth with 113 runs.
Hanson sent back to Double A: Travis Hanson, a former South Kitsap and University of Portland baseball player, is currently with the Springfield (Mo.) Cardinals, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, after spending most of this season with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds.
Hanson, the Cardinals 2005 Minor League Player of the Year, has three hits in 12 at-bats (.250) and three RBIs in three games with Springfield.
In 67 games with Memphis, Hanson hit .220 with a home run, a triple, 11 doubles and 18 RBIs.
Last year with Springfield, Hanson was a Texas League All-Star and finished the season among the league leaders in several categories by hitting .284 with 20 home runs, 97 RBIs, 29 doubles and three triples.
Â Sports Guard Day set at Naumann Johnson Orthodontics: Naumann Johnson Orthodontics will sponsor a free customized mouth guard to South Kitsap and other area districts for all fall Junior High and High School athletes.
The sports guard day will be held June 23 from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Naumann Johnson Orthodontic building in Silverdale and Port Orchard. No appointment is necessary.
All athletes under the age of 18 will be required to have parental permission slips signed and these forms are available in each school and at the Orthodontic office during the event. Each athlete will have an impression performed (with or without braces) and then the mouth guard will be made in their school color with their school logo.
The mouth guards will also have the athletes name imprinted on them. They will be delivered back to the school athletic director in a colored case.
The Port Orchard office is located at 1565 Woodridge Dr. Ste. B.
Summer fastpitch league now forming: Northstars will be sponsoring a fastpitch league for 12U and 14U teams this summer. Games will start the week of July 17 and continue through Aug. 16.
Game will start at 5:30 and 7 p.m. Each team will play six league games and at least two games in a tournament.
Most games will be held at the North Kitsap High School. Cost is $450 per team and age requirements are based on players age as of Jan. 1 of this year.

SK Soccer Club schedules camp: The South Kitsap Soccer Club has scheduled its Challenger Soccer Camp for Aug. 7-11 at Hidden Creek Elementary school.
The camp will be run by Challenger's British coaching staff and consist of high quality, age specific soccer instruction, along with equally important elements of character, cultural and nutritional education.
