Villwock announces retirement from hydro racing

Dave Villwock, a 1972 South Kitsap graduate and winningest driver in Unlimited Hydroplane racing history, announced his retirement earlier this week.

“I don’t plan to drive again, but I will always be around boat racing,” Villwock told the H1 Unlimited website. “If someone is trying to figure out why they don’t go fast, I might be able to help.”

Villwock, a 10-time Gold Cup champion, cut ties with his Ellstrom team as well.

“Dave Villwock has retired from our team,” team owner Erick Ellstrom said. “We had a great run together and celebrated many victories together. We are not aware of his future plans, but we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”

Villwock won the last five Gold Cups, becoming the oldest champion of the race last summer at age 58. He also won Seafair a record 10 times.
