TENNIS | Kailyn Skjonsby places eighth at state tournament

Despite losing her first match, South Kitsap senior Kailyn Skjonsby placed eighth during last weekend’s Class 4A state girls tennis championships in Richland.

Skjonsby lost 6-3, 6-1, against Inglemoor’s Sabrina Demerathon on May 24, but recovered to defeat Tahoma’s Maddie Turek and Inglemoor’s Janae Chinn in consolation.

That put her into the fifth- and eighth-place match against Edmonds-Woodway’s Myint-Zu Kyaw. She lost that match 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

This marked the first time Skjonsby placed at state.

She won the 4A Narrows’ girls singles championship in each of the last two seasons.
