• Overview: Last year was a transition season for Gig Harbor as Chantler succeeded longtime coach Darren McKay. South took advantage of that as its 13-point win against the Tides was its largest margin of victory since 2000 (27-7). It also ended a two-game losing streak in the rivalry for the Wolves. The challenge figures to be greater this season. Not only is it a road game for South, but the Tides have improved. They feature a bigger line than a year ago, which proved to be a challenge last week for South in its loss against Newport, and the talent is more suited to the pass-friendly offense Chandler runs. Scanlan has several capable receiving targets led by Carlson, who is committed to the University of Montana. Similar to last season, the Wolves need to take advantage of Gig Harbor’s defense, which has allowed an average of 27.5 points per game this year. Even though it is the league opener, this could be a critical game for South’s playoff hopes as it plays league favorite Bellarmine Prep and at Olympia the next two weeks.
