GOLF | Kopta qualifies for state

Consistency.

That was the word South Kitsap junior Sarah Kopta, who shot an 84 on the Cascade Course on Monday at Gold Mountain to finish third in the Class 4A West Central/Southwest Bi-District girls golf tournament, repeated as she contemplated her preparation for state.

The top 11 competitors from districts advanced to the May 28-29 4A state tournament at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver. Bellarmine Prep’s Lisa Zelaski shot a 75 to earn medalist honors.

“It’s going to be my second year, so I’m hoping to make the cut,” Kopta said. “That’s my main goal this year. I didn’t make the cut last year.”

Kopta, who shot an 82 last year in the same event at Gold Mountain, wants her rounds to become more congruent. For example, she shot a 46 on the front nine holes at Gold Mountain and 38 on the back half.

“I’m hoping to put my lower back nines together,” she said, laughing. “Last year I was more consistent.”
