Basketball: Central Kitsap girls continue mastery over South Kitsap

It felt like a three-point shootout at times.

But the success rate was far better for Central Kitsap in its 50-42 win against South Kitsap on Wednesday night in Silverdale.

The Wolves (9-3 overall, 6-1 league) suffered their first loss in Narrows League play as they converted just two of 17 attempts from beyond the arc.

South contained the Cougars’ shooters early en route to a 10-7 lead entering the second period.

“We just struggled to get into our offensive set,” Central coach Denise Baxter said. “We’re just so young and we don’t recognize the offense as much as I’d like them to recognize it.”

But Central (8-4, 4-3) opened the second quarter with a 14-2 run buoyed by a trio of 3-pointers. Senior guard Tajanae Tibbs gave her team its first lead, 13-12, with 5 minutes, 48 seconds left on a 3-pointer.

“I think we let up a little bit,” South coach Mark Lutzenhiser said.

Despite the run, the Wolves closed the deficit to 23-21 at halftime behind four consecutive points by junior guard Kelsey Callaghan.

The Cougars, who have won the last 14 meetings between the schools since the rivalry resumed in 2001-02, looked like they might put away South in the third period. Junior guard Brittany Zawadzki hit a 3-pointer — Central converted 6 of 15 attempts from that range — to give the Cougars their largest lead, 35-22, with 2 minutes, 20 seconds left in the quarter.

But the Wolves took advantage of Central’s 25 turnovers in the final period to cut away at their deficit. Junior Jodi Bowe reduced the Cougars’ lead to 43-40 on a bank shot with 2:20 left.

They made the run without junior Dana Goularte, who fouled out with 3:40 left. She finished with a team-high 12 points.

“She does a lot of things (for us),” Lutzenhiser said. “It takes us out of what we can do offensively. But other kids have to take the opportunity to show what they can do.”

Instead, it was Central that made plays toward the end. Behind sophomore guard Krista Stabler, who scored a game-high 20 points, the Cougars made 11 of 12 free throws in the final period to maintain the lead.

That is just four points less than Goularte, Danielle Stewart and Molly Werder combined to score. Baxter said limiting those three was a focus for her team in preparation for the game.

“That was a big difference,” she said. “If we could keep those three at bay, we felt we had a pretty good chance.”

After winning its first eight games, South has lost three of its last four. The Wolves, who host Olympia tonight, defeated Stadium 57-20 on Friday.

“We didn’t have much fight,” Callaghan said. “But I feel bad for Olympia. We’re not in the best of moods.”
