Track: Four individuals, one relay advance to state

She was a three-sport athlete last year, but did not advance to state in any of them.

A year later, South Kitsap senior Erika Copeland is two for two.

After qualifying for state in cross country during the fall, Copeland is one of four Wolves who will compete in Star Track on Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School.

She placed sixth in both the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 19.51 seconds) and 1,600 (5:10.83). The top six placers in each event at Friday and Saturday’s West Central District meet at Mount Tahoma advanced to state.

“It was my goal to go to state my senior year,” Copeland said. “Even though I barely made it, I still think it’s an accomplishment.”

As a junior, Copeland ran both cross country and track, but did not advance beyond districts. She was on the junior-varsity squad when the school’s basketball team qualified for state in 2008-09.

“We’re getting her convinced that she has it in her,” track coach Joanne Warren said. “She’s just going to get better and better.”

Now, she is the only South athlete who will compete in multiple events at state. It did not come easy as Copeland ran a personal-best time in the 1,600 to hold off Central Kitsap’s Shannon Moskowitz, who signed to run at Boise State University. Moskowitz finished seventh in 5:12.29.

Junior Riley Dopps is the Wolves’ only other individual state qualifier in a running event. A week after setting the school record in the 800 at the Narrows League Championships, she finished sixth in 59.37.

Dopps also was part of the 1,600 relay team that finished one position out of state in 4:09.58. But the 800 relay team of Hillary Hestead, Bethany Sanchez, Chelsi Swanson and Amanda Wilson placed seventh in 1:46.46.

“Erika is the only senior I’ve got running on the girls side,” Warren said. “I tell them that they’re a great spot for next year.”

Sophomore Kelsie Forcier was South’s top placer. She finished fourth in the discus at 118 feet, 3 inches.

“Making it to state is a big thing for a sophomore,” she said.

That does not mean Forcier is just content with showing up for the event, though. She was planning a busy week in the weight room to get ready.

“I need to work on technique and power,” Forcier said. “I know there’s things I need to work on, but it’s hard to remember when you’re in the circle.”

She missed qualifying for state by a little more than three feet in the shot put. Forcier was ninth in that competition in 35-02. Bethel’s Danielle Tabb and Foss’ Siatunuu Tuupo earned the final two spots to state in 38-05.75.

“I was really upset with the shot put,” Forcier said. “Next year I’m going to make it in for sure.”

Junior Shelby Jackson, who was the Wolves’ only female to advance to state a year ago, returns to state for a second straight season. She was fifth in the javelin (115-04).

For the first time in Warren’s five-year tenure, none of her boys qualified for state. Seniors Colin Burgh (discus) and Andrew Crock (800, 1,600 relay) and sophomore Nathan O’Guin (400, 1,600 relay) were the only boys who competed at districts for South.

Crock was the closest to qualify for state. He finished 10th in the 800 in 1:58.22.

“I’m a little disappointed that none of my boys made it through,” Warren said. “Andrew ran great race — it was just a hot 800.”
